Phone calls, emails, text messages — scammers have learned how to access every avenue of our day-to-day communications. This fact has hit close to home for many Delawareans. Some DEC members may have recently received phone calls stating that their electric bill payment is late. The caller then tells members that the Co-op is using a new bank and recommends that members pay their bill by providing sensitive account and payment information over the phone, even if they have already paid their bill. Be advised: this is NOT a legitimate call!
“If you get a call out of the blue about disconnecting your services and if you know you have not been delinquent in paying your bill, this is a scam,” said Ben Galvacky, DEC’s Information Security Manager. “DEC also does not call members to confirm personal or payment information.”
DEC will never request an immediate over-the-phone payment. Nor will we ask members to reveal personal or payment information electronically or over the phone. Any calls from Delaware Electric Cooperative will be issued in the form of a notice to make the member aware of an issue with their account, not a threat of disconnecting their electricity.
“DEC offers members the ability to pay their bills using our automatic bill pay option, our website and phone app, postal mail, or by calling us and using our automated payment system at 855-332-9090. We also accept payment in person at our headquarters in Greenwood, Del., or at our drive-through security deposit box for after business hours payments.”
