If you’ve driven south of Dover along Route 1 recently, you probably noticed a sea of green as you approached Milford. What drivers are noticing is the new DE Turf Sports Complex, a state-of-the-art complex featuring 12 synthetic turf fields, including a championship stadium with seating for 750 spectators.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the facility in May, but the venue has been packed with players and their parents for months. During Easter weekend, DE Turf hosted the College Connections field hockey tournament, bringing 84 teams and more than 4,000 visitors to Kent County. More than 20 additional tournaments have been scheduled for 2017.
The complex can accommodate soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, football, rugby and even ultimate Frisbee — many of the fields are also lighted. The team at DE Turf also offers seasonal leagues, camps and space for local sports teams to practice or hold games.
While DE Turf has only been fully operational for a few months, the complex has already received national recognition for providing a memorable experience for athletes and their families. SportsEvents magazine has named the venue one of the top 10 multi-use sports facilities in the United States. “We are thrilled with the experience we are able to offer players. This is an incredible complex that is quickly earning a reputation for excellence along the East Coast. We are excited to welcome a growing number of tournaments to Kent County and look forward to expanding our offerings of local programs for kids,” said DE Turf Executive Director Chris Giacomucci.
The new facility, designed by Becker Morgan Group and constructed by Richard Y. Johnson & Son, is expected to pump $18 million into the local economy annually. Work on the project began in May of 2016 after business leaders and Kent County officials proposed the idea back
